Cabinets…Day 6

Martha (my sister) and I spent some time Saturday morning trying to precisely place the base for the island in the kitchen. We used a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood as a surrogate countertop and ended up getting the base really close to where I think it belongs. We will end up with 48” between the sink and island and nearly 42”of space at the oven.  It is really fun to see all of the elements of the kitchen coming together!

The first photo below shows the cabinet installed on the end wall of the mudroom. This will sit above a laminate countertop in the end where our dog kennels will be placed. The last photo shows a close up of the lower corner cabinet in the kitchen with the 32” lazy Susan.

Carpentry…Day 5

The Solid Construction crew spent part of Friday putting the finishing touches on the stairway to the bonus room from the garage. The first two photos show the 2 x 12 stair treads, hand rails, and finish carpentry details on the stairs.

The next photo shows the high window in the stairwell with the stool & apron sill and trim installed.

Painting…Day 10

As promised yesterday…The Carmichael crew has been busy turning the bonus room into a production painting operation. I think all 30 doors from the second floor are spread out in the room stained and ready for polyurethane.

Cabinets…Day 5

Dan and the Solid Construction crew continue their finish carpentry work in the “L” Shaped House. Today they have been concentrating on the crown molding around the tops of the cabinetry as well as finishing up some other trim details. The first photo shows the East wall of the kitchen and dining room with the crown molding installed.

The next photo shows a close shot of the dining room hutch upper cabinet. The hutch is made from cherry and will be stained and varnished. The cabinet will include glass shelves and interior lighting for a very elegant look.

The third photo shows the cabinets above the washer and dryer in the first floor laundry with the crown moldings applied. The high cabinet on the right goes all the way to the ceiling and becomes the receptacle for the laundry chute from above.

Next is yet another view of the kitchen desk and pantry cabinets with the new crown molding installed. The idea behind this element is to provide a convenient place to store kitchen supplies right next to the desk. The last photo shows the built-in linen closet and open shelving unit installed in the master bath.

Painting…Day 9

Rick and the crew from Carmichael decorating are out today staining doors. Every interior door in the “L” Shaped House (except the door to the bonus room) will be stained poplar. Steve Carmichael worked with us to get a stain for the doors and we are getting our first look at the “real thing” today. The first photo shows the stained doors drying in the bonus room.

the next photo shows a little more of the staining operation. Steve and his crew plan to turn the bonus room into a production staining and painting workshop for the next few weeks. If I understand things correctly they plan to stand the doors in an accordion fashion across the room allowing them to spray both sides in one glorious operation…stay tuned!

Cabinets…Day 4 (Evening Report)

Helen and I stopped by this evening to see how far the Solid Construction guys got installing cabinets. They have almost every cabinet mounted and the house swept clean. The panoramic photo below shows the entire kitchen with everything but the dishwasher cabinet and vent hood installed. It is an absolutely amazing transformation…The “L” Shaped House is starting to feel like a…HOUSE!

Next is a shot that just catches the far end of the dining room and looks out toward the hall to the breezeway. In it we see cherry cabinetry in the end wall of the dining room and the kitchen desk area. The base for the Cambria island is in place in the center of the kitchen.

The third photo shows the kitchen desk area in detail. The cabinet above the desk will house a flat screen television as well as cook books in the open shelf above. The tall pantry sits just to the right of the desk and has a large cabinet with shelving above. The last photo shows the built-in buffet at the end of the dining room. The base cabinet will get a cherry top and uppers will have glass shelves and interior lighting.

Cabinets…Day 4

The Great Woods Cabinetry guys delivered the remaining cabinets last night and the Solid Construction crew is hard at work installing them. By noon today they had most of the kitchen and living room cabinets placed. The first photo shows the center wall of the kitchen with almost all the upper and lower cabinets installed. The tall cabinet on the left will house the double oven. The gas cooktop and vent hood will be centered above the bank of wide drawers below.

The next photo shows the back wall of the living room with the window seat, base cabinets and book shelves installed. The lower cabinets on the left will house some of our audio visual equipment and has a passive cooling system built into the base.

The third photo shows the refrigerator cabinet at the far end of the kitchen toward the laundry room. The last photo shows a closer shot of the living room window seat and cabinetry. All of this activity is really exciting…especially after almost one year of imagining what it will look like!

Cabinets…Day 3

The Solid Construction guys are busy installing the Great Woods Cabinetry throughout the “L” Shaped House. The first photo shows the upper cabinets installed on the South wall of the laundry room. The cabinet on the far right will collect laundry thrown down the chute from above .

The next photo shows one of the desks installed in the book nook behind the archway at the top of the stairs. The wall at the back is marked to receive three of the shelves that will be installed above the desks on both sides of the book nook. The last photo shows the built-in linen closet installed in the kids bathroom.

Cabinets…Day 2

The Great Woods Cabinetry guys delivered another trailer load of cabinets this afternoon. The load includes many of the kitchen cabinets and gives us our first look at the inset doors and exposed butt hinges. The first photo shows the counter height kitchen desk that will be installed on the East wall. It includes a wide pencil drawer, two junk drawers, and a file drawer.

The next photo shows the base cabinet for the kitchen sink and the upper corner cabinet for the far wall. The inset doors and exposed butt hinges combined with the distressed white finish will complete the farm house look in this space.

The last photo shows the pantry cabinet that will sit adjacent the kitchen desk . The five drawer bases in the lower portion will provide easy access to the items stored here while the cabinet above houses shelves.
