The Fireplace…The Mantel

Working with the guys at Mendota Mantels in Saint Paul has been really fun and interesting. I met with Dan Guion and Tom Schoeller about a month ago at their shop after finding their website while searching for information about recovered timber mantels. Dan and I have been communicating about a mantel design for the fireplace in the “L” Shaped House ever since. He has helped me understand how and what he can do even as he has patiently endured my constant pestering. The sketch below shows the basic dimensions of the mantel Dan and I have agreed he will build.

The mantel includes the following features;

  • The mantel will be made from re-sawn timbers recovered from the Globe Grain Elevator in Superior Wisconsin (read about it here).
  • Dan will texture the mantel using a draw knife to give it a hand-worked look and recess a pair of wedge mortises in the front face.
  • We will get together at his shop to help as he mixes the dark stain he will use as he applies the finish on the mantel (he assures me this is the best part of the Mendota Mantels “experience”).
  • The mantel will be delivered in three pieces (Paul Winters will assemble and mount it to the wall).

Mantel 12 (dimensions 3)

The end result should look something like the Photoshop sketch below.
