The planning and execution of the new driveway for the “L” Shaped House has been a surprisingly complicated process. Placing the garage behind the house on the property was one of the very first decisions we made as we planned our new home. Placing the new garage on the East side of the house requires that we remove the existing driveway and extend the new asphalt surface to the far end of our new garage. This decision has brought with it many complications and extra expenses but I think serves to provide a smaller profile from the street, facilitates the basement walk-out, and preserves the wonderful view toward the pond. The sketch below is a Photoshop creation that has the JLM landscaping plan superimposed on the original survey. Clicking on the sketch will take you to a bigger version of the composite drawing. In the sketch I have highlighted the original driveway (grey) and house (orange) as well as the new asphalt drive on the East side. The new house and garage structures are outlined with heavy black lines.
The first photo shows the new driveway from the middle of the street (Cottage Lane) out front.
The next photo shows the new driveway from a spot just in front of the house looking toward the street.
